A lovely native perennial with tall flowering stalks topped with orange bristly central cones surrounded by rays of reflexed, rose-purple petals. Foliage is coarse-textured and forms dense clumps that can be divided every few years. A delight to a multitude of pollinators as both a nectar source and host plant. Flowering stalks left in place add winter interest and structure to the garden and the thistle-like seeds are enjoyed by finches and other songbirds. Tolerant of a wide array of soil conditions so long as there is good drainage. Tolerates partial shade but is more floriferous in full sun. Height 24-48".
